2011 / 2012 Project Highlights

The following are some of the projects that the Village has been working on over the last fiscal year. Some programs are ongoing. These projects were achieved without any increased costs to the Village either through outside funding and grants or by performing the work "in-house" as opposed to using outside vendors and contractors.

  • Improved Crosswalks - The Village, working with the Town and County has installed "stamped asphalt" textured crosswalks throughout the downtown area.
Stamped asphalt crosswalks last longer and are attractive. They enhance pedestrian safety and a walkable downtown.
  • Improved drainage and surfacing on Lumber Rd. Poor drainage has long been an issue on this road and was a contributing factor in the deterioration of the road surface. The Village, as well as a number of businesses have all improved their drainage. Extensive surfacing work was also performed by the Village DPW crew.
  • New Street sign posts in The Pines community. Replacing aging sign posts and sign brackets to enhance the community.
  • Purchase of a speed displaying and data collection sign. The data is forwarded to Nassau County Police to better allocate speed enforcement activities. It additionally acts as a warning and deterrent to drivers who are speeding.
  • Approval for a grant and DEC Permit approval for replacement of the bulkhead at the Lumber Rd. parking lot. This multi-year grant driven project will replace the failing bulkhead, include resurfacing the parking lot and include a walkway and seating area adjacent to the creek.
  • Completion of the East Broadway stroll park through outside funding. This new park is a charming addition to the downtown area and includes plantings, a sculpture and benches for relaxing.
  • Recovery of expenditures for snow removal and hurricane Irene clean-up through FEMA disaster programs. DPW staff worked with Nassau County, NY State and FEMA in gathering documentation on expenditures incurred during these declared disasters. The reimbursement alleviates any additional financial burdens incurred by the village as a result of these event.
  • Fought to re-establish municipal parking under the new viaduct. Upon conclusion of the viaduct project, the state planned on closing off the area under the viaduct. There is now munincipal parking with Muni-Meter style parking meter machines to be installed.
  • Repairs and lining of sewer mains. As part of the ongoing capital improvements of the Villages sanitary system, repairs and lining of sections of the sewer main are continuing.
  • Restoration of the tower clock mechanism. The Village has contracted with a restoration expert to repair and restore the actual mechanisim which runs all four clock faces at the clock tower. The time works were removed and taken to his shop upstate NY where they will be fixed and calibrated then reinstalled.
  • Re-striping and numbering at the Edward St. municipal parking to improve space visibility performed by Village DPW crew.
  • In-house clock tower interior restoration under the direction of architect / village trustee Craig Westergard. Deteriorate interior framing is being replace and repaired by the Public Works Department under the supervision of Village Trustee and architect Craig Westergard.
  • Emergency management purchase of a generator for village hall. This system will allow Village Hall operations to continue should the area be impacted by another event such as Hurricane Irene. The Village Hall would provide a location for residents without power to come and charge their cell phones and laptops so they may stay in communication with friends and family.
  • In-house ability to do CCTV video and pressure jet much of the sanitary sewer system, will eliminate some vendor fees. Providing the Public Works Department with the equipment to perform routine video inspection and cleaning of the Village sanitary and storm systems will save thousands of dollars with each use.
  • New dept of public works ford f450 dump truck. Replacing the oldest vehicle in the Village fleet, this new truck will replace a 1996 vehicle that has reached its life expectancy and would have become unsafe. The new vehicle is equipped with plowing and spreader and meets the current requirements for safety lighting and visibility and will assure continued successful snow removal operations for many winters to come.
  • Installation of lighting and security measures at Edward St. Parking lot. In response to an increase in criminal activity in this particular parking field, the Village has upgraded the lighting in the lot and is installing four security cameras that will digitally records all activity there. In the event of an incident the recorded data can be immediately given to the police to view.

Intermunincipal Agreement with North Hempstead

The Village has availed itself to the benefits that may be available through contractual agreement with the Town of North Hempstead. There are many government functions that large towns can perform "in house" where a smaller village must contract out for these functions. One example is road signs. If the Village needs to replace a "Stop" sign, the sign is purchased from an outside sign manufacturer. The Town has its own sign shop and the intermunincipal agree would allow us to purchase signs from the Town, provided that they can supply them at lower cost. By exploring the various functions and services that are available from the Town, Roslyn Village hopes to further reduce operating costs. We are now entering our second year of this program.
